Its that time of year, New Years Resolution!  80s-dancers-taylor-swift-shake-it-off

This is when the gyms get overly crowded.  All the trainers and sales staff are rubbing there  hands together ready for a new customer but slightly smirking at the same time.  They know that half of these overly excited, pumped up new comers swearing they are ready for real this time aren’t gonna make it past March.

I know, its a harsh reality.  Especially for the ones who really believe in their hearts they are gonna do it this time.

But the ones who really suffer are the dedicated gym rats who have been coming faithfully 2-5 times a week since last year and the year before that.  Look at their angry and frustrated faces as they unsuspectingly walk toward the next machine with their heart-rate still racing, only to be let down when they realize its being used by someone who clearly doesn’t even know how to use it.  “Their range of motion is way too wide for that machine!”  The gym rat yells to themselves.  The poor gym rat looks around to find the alternative to that machine, only to see that its also taken. “Ah!”  “I’ll just use the free-weights.  Sure my heart-rate has gone down a bit but I can get it back.  I should be free-weighting it out anyway.  Let me quit being lazy.”  The gym rat thinks.  But just as they go to the barbell rack, they notice everything is taken.  After scanning the room in frenzy, they see 2 skinny teenage boys struggling to use the size barbell they wanted.  “Oh come on!  Are they even old enough to be here?”  They look towards the dumbbell rack.  “Taken!”ughhhhhhh  “I hate January.”  They Gym rat bellows.  “I’ll be glad when March comes and everyone gets over their stupid New years resolution!”

If your a trainer, gym employee or gym rat, you know what I’m talking about.  If you’re a January-March fitness buff, you should know this is whats is going on behind the scene.

Don’t let this turn you away from the gym or your resolution.  Maybe you can just let this be motivation for you not to be so predictable this year.  Keep your commitment.  Be strong, then come June, look that gym rat right in the eye come and give them a  nod like “Yeah Homie, break yo self, I’m here to stay!”18st Schoolboy

You can do it!

Tip to not being a January-Marcher:

Pace yourself.

If you haven’t been doing hardly any working out the previous year, don’t try to be a super hero now.  You are not gonna make up for what you did over the holidays by going crazy at the gym all of a sudden. Start with 2 days a week.  Sustain that for a month, then go to 3.  If you do too much too fast you will only burn yourself out.  This goes for nutrition too.

Don’t diet.

Simply come up with healthy manageable adjustments.  Start planning ahead what your gonna eat.  Before you get hungry.

Introduce yourself to a healthy new dish once a month.                                                 Experiment with different spices and vegetables.

Also try out a new way to get active.  Maybe a dance class, swim lessons, ooh how about  fullsizerender-1 YOGA!

And if you need help with what to do or accountability, then get it!  Be honest. Invest in yourself.  You are worth it!

Don’t be that person done with their goals after 3 months.

Be better than you were last year.

What can your body do after 50?   Leave a comment

Is it possible that you can get in the best shape of your life after 50?  It depends, were you once a super healthy, Olympic status fitness master?  If the answer is yes, well it might be kind of hard to top that but not impossible.  If the answer is no, then hell yeah its possible!  How bad do you want it and how much time and energy are you willing to put in to get it?

Can you imagine reinventing your life right now?  If you could be as fit as you always wanted, what would that feel like?  What would you do that you can’t do now or are too afraid to do?  How is your health right now?  What if it was perfect?

Is this too hard for you to imagine?

Ever heard of Sister Madonna Buder who is 86 and has completed over 360 triathlons and 45 Iron man competitions?  And get this, she only begun running at age 48. iron-nun-madonna-buder-2

Or how about Tao Porchon-Lynch age 98 who still teaches yoga.

Of course we can’t forget about our ageless beauty Annette Larkins annette_larkins_garden

who was mentioned in one of our earlier post here.

Believe it or not, Annette is over 70 years of age and on zero medication.  Although not her intentions, she pretty much stopped the aging process by juicing and eating a raw vegan diet for over 20 years.

Now I think we can all agree that these women aren’t official super heroes.  Nope.  Just beautiful spirits that once made a decision to give themselves more out of life.  Anyone of these women  could be you.  All you have to do is decide you want more out for yourself, more out of your body.  You can still do amazing things with this life and with yourself.  As a yoga teacher, I’ve seen amazing transformations with people with sciatic nerve and back pain become pretty much pain free.  I’ve seen people who couldn’t even put one leg up on a chair, now can lift their leg past their chest.  Sure it may have taken a lot of effort and consistency and maybe even a few months of practice but the pay off was so worth it.

Just decide yes and the answers will come!  I’m serious say it.  Say yes I want more out of my life.  I want to be healthy!  I want to be fit!  I want lots of energy!  I want amazing things for myself.  Say I am worthy!

You are worthy.

Just decide and watch the answers come.

AdjustYourfitnessDNA   Leave a comment

dna picThe Adjust your fitness DNA program is based on Epigenetics.
As you may already know, In the middle of a cell in your body is the Nucleus. Each nucleus is packed with Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA) which is a chemical packed with information. It is organized into groups called genes which are arranged on thread like structures we call chromosomes. Every chromosome contains thousands of genes.
That’s a lot of information that goes into you as a human. From the color of your eyes, to the range of pant size you’re more likely to wear. DNA plays a huge role.
But, it is not the end all be all. That’s where epigenetics comes in.
Epigenetics is the study of contributing outside factors that can influence the chemical reactions and its development.
For example, Diabetes may run in your family but scientist now have found out that it is not 100% guaranteed that you will develop it.
Let’s say two parents living in New York City have diabetes. They decide to send their child to live with an Aunt that lives in Oregon. The Aunt only eats healthy organic non-processed foods and makes the child do the same. Let’s also say the Aunt believes in doing lots of fun physical activities such as hiking, camping, kayaking, swimming and jogging.
The change in environment, diet and physical activity already has a huge positive impact on this child’s DNA.
#1. There is no doubt the air quality in Oregon is cleaner than that in New York City. So the fresh supply of oxygen circulating through the child’s lungs already has an effect the cells.
#2. Oregon is more open with lots of beautiful scenery. This has a positive effect in the brain which sends positive functional signals to the rest of the body. According to Dr. Deepak Chopra, every though you have has a biological correlation.
#3. Eating healthy organic, non-processed foods give the cells in your body the nutrients they need to be balanced and function properly.
#4. All the fun physical exercise helps the blood to circulate freely, speed up the child’s metabolism, keeps the muscles toned and releases serotonin. Serotonin is a chemical created in the body that effect major brain cells that are responsible for the functioning of our cardiovascular systems, muscles and various elements in the endocrine system. Also as you may already know, Serotonin affects you being in a good mood.
All of these factors highly reduce the likelihood of this child having diabetes like the parents. The diabetes chain in this child’s DNA may never get activated.
So now we know thanks to Epigenetics that we have some control over what happens with our DNA.
This applies to weight, happiness and overall health.
Knowing that these things can be in your hands, wouldn’t you want to do everything in your power live the life you want?
If so let me help you.

Every year thousands of people make a commitment on New Years that this will be the year they will finally do what they always wanted.                                                                                                                                                                        They say this is the year they will get in shape or be healthy.  As a trainer I’ve watch the flood of people come in the gym motivated and convinced they will not fail.  I see them going strong for about 2 months then around March they come in a little less, claiming work, kids, or spouses got in the way.  But they are still determined that they are ready to get back on track.  This pattern of up and down continues for about 2 more months until sometime between June-August they just stop coming altogether.   When I do see them maybe once or twice, they come in with shame in their eyes, not making eye contact.  They sometimes avoid me when I’m not even their trainer!

Then you’ll see them the next New Years at the same health level or even worse than the previous New Year.  The sad part is if they are doing this with their health, more than likely the same pattern occurs to all aspects of their life.  It could be a bad relationship, a career, school, attitude, even happiness.   All these goals of a better life are planned.  So many commitments are made.

But before they year is at a half way point, all those commitments fall into the sea of “I’ll get it back I swear!”

What will your life be like in the future?   Leave a comment

With so many diet related diseases and ailments, it makes you wonder why doesn’t everyone eat healthy.  But what is eating healthy?  Is it following the food pyramid guide that was introduced by the USDA in 1992?   But wait, that may not be wise seeing as how in 2001 the USDA lost a lawsuit against them because of their financial ties to the food industry (meat&dairy).  Wow and they were telling everyone to eat 2-3 servings of meat, 2-3 servings of dairy and 6-11 servings of bread, cereal and pasta!  I’m pretty sure that if anyone followed the food Pyramid exactly from 1992-2001, that they are overweight.

The food Pyramid didn’t get updated til 2005 and then replaced in 2011.

There has been evidence linking dairy to breast cancer, asthma and allergies.  Beef to colon cancer and Pork to high blood pressure.       These are just to name a very small few.

As a personal trainer and a citizen of One of the most overweight countries in the world, I realized that there is a lack of knowledge regarding to what is healthy.  There is also a food addiction epidemic.

What does America and some of the other top overweight countries have in common?  Processed foods are for one.                                          Just to clear clear, if it is not how it originally grows, or you didn’t kill and prepare it yourself, it’s more than likely processed.

What If an angel told you that you are going to suffer from health problems in your late 40s -60s. What would you do? That you will be overweight and too tired to enjoy your life to the fullest at 45.  That you will develop low self-esteem because of your illness and weight issues.  That you will die before the age of 75 or if you do live beyond that you will suffer. What would you do?

What if that the angel said oh wait, I’m looking at your book of life and it looks like you have an alternate path you may take.  If you cut down your processed food intake by 50-100%, eat more vegetables than anything, stop drinking sodas, don’t fry your food, don’t eat any meat from a fast food restaurant, if you must have “junk” only 10% of the time, if you must eat meat don’t have it everyday and only have lean small portions that have been baked or grilled.  Cut out as much sugar as possible, limit your salt and exercise 3 times a week.  Would you do it?

Then The angel says, “Here is what your life may look like if you do this:  You will have a great body weight.  You will have the energy to do the things you’ve always wanted to do.  You will enjoy life, meet fun and interesting people. Your self-esteem will be good because you feel good about yourself.  You will not suffer because of health and you will live long enough to see you children grow up as well as your grandchildren.                                                                                    You will still be able to move around freely at 80.”

Now before anybody gets offended, I am aware that anything in life may happen and just because you eat right and exercise doesn’t mean a person won’t die young or have health problems.  So many other things can effect health like environment, genetics and mental state.  Also I am not implying that people overweight are less happy than people who are not.  Although I do believe that you feel good about yourself when you have made a conscious effort to take care of your body inside and out and you follow through.  Also it have been proven that you decrease your chance of developing certain ailments when you eat healthy and exercise.

I would like to suggest this challenge to you:

Map out your life over the next 20 years and see what it may look like if you continue the path you’re own.  If you continue to eat the way you do whether it’s healthy or not.  How many pounds have you gained or lost over the past year?  Now times that by 20.   Then look up the statistic of that weight as it pertains to health.  Draw a picture in your mind of how you will look.  How will you feel?  What are the things you will be able to do?  What are the things you wont?   If you don’t like the picture, take action now!  There is no magic pill to take to change your life.  Don’t trust everything that is advised to you by the USDA, media or doctors.  Be your own health detective.  Research vitamins, foods, herbs, medicine and holistic healing.

I believe God gave us everything we need here on this earth as well as free will.  So its up to you to decide the life you want.  Map out what your life will look like if you make positive changes.

What do you want your life to be like in the future?   May you be blessed with the better life.

Yogi Tea   Leave a comment

Yogi teas are probably my favorite brand right now.  They blend different herbs together to make the perfect taste and recipes for your needs.   I always keep their Super Antioxidant Green Tea in my cupboard and I try to drink a cup almost every day.

Did you know that 3 cups of green tea a day can reduce your risk of breast cancer by 50%?   That’s huge!
I also love Yogi’s Bedtime tea.  When I was little I used to love Celestial seasoning’s Sleepy Time tea.  It is a blend of chamomile, lemon grass, and spearmint.  I used to actually beg my mom for it.  Yogi’s bedtime tea has those same ingredients plus like 9 more including cinnamon bark, licorice root and lavender flower.

I personally don’t put sweetener in my tea anyway but if you do, I would suggest you try it without first.  Yogi tea’s have such great blends of flavors,  that you don’t need to add anything.

Each tea bag has a little words of inspiration attached.  Today mine said, “Trust creates peace.”   How cute is that?  But besides being cute, they are really doing good for the reader.   I believe in the power of affirmations, so to be able to read something encouraging and positive every time you have a cup of tea, is awesome!  They also have a yoga position on every box.

Yogi teas definitely get a stamp of approval from Calivegans!  They fit right in to our holistic lifestyle.

I love yoga!   Leave a comment

Many people think yoga is all about some form of exercises involving weird stretches and heavy breathing.  Okay, I admit some of the stretches are a bit out of the norm and breathing is a huge part of it, so to some degree I guess those people may be right.  But there is so much more.

Yoga can relieve a large variety of ailments.  Yoga also helps you to withdraw from the world around you and focus your mind.  This is done by breathing through the asanas (poses).  Once you have concentration, you are prepared for meditation.  Meditation in my opinion is essential for productive living and spiritual growth.

So all in all, while doing yoga you are keeping your mind focused, nurturing your soul and getting a great work out at the same time!  Who can ask for anything more in a practice?

To all the people who look at yoga and turn their nose up, I know some where deep down you really want to try a Downward Facing Dog, and haven’t we all been in Tadasana at one point or another?  I’m personally in favor of Vrksasana.  Talk about knowing if you need a V8 or not, lol.

Hmmmm maybe this has gone a little too far.  Not!

I love Yoga!
